CCHR highlights concerns about increased strikes at garment factories in 2013

The Cambodian Center for Human Rights (“CCHR”) is concerned by reports in The Phnom Penh Post on 21 January 2013 (‘Strikes in Cambodian factories may hit orders’) that about 10,000 workers have been in an ongoing strike against seven or eight factories since the beginning of 2013 to demand an increase in the minimum wage and an improvement in working conditions.

On 29 January 2012, the Cambodian Center for Human Rights (“CCHR”) will host a Roundtable Discussion on “Land and The Rights of Indigenous People” with the participation of representatives of indigenous peoples groups affected by land conflicts, representatives from relevant institutions, NGOs and the parliamentarians from political parties, facilitating approximately 30 participants.

CCHR commends Appeal Court for overturning guilty verdict for Phlong Srey Rann

The Cambodian Center for Human Rights (“CCHR”) commends the decision by the Appeal Court on 31 December 2012 to overturn the Phnom Penh Municipal Court’s 2011 guilty verdict for Phlong Srey Rann. Srey Rann, a lesbian, was accused of illegal detention and human trafficking by her girlfriend’s family and sentenced to five years in prison in November 2011 after being convicted on charges of statutory rape.

CCHR Applauds Court of Appeal Prosecutor General for Taking Over Bundith Case

The Cambodian Center for Human Rights (“CCHR”) welcomes the decision by the Prosecutor General of the Court of Appeal – reported by The Cambodia Daily on 31 December 2012 (‘Appeal Court Takes Over Bundith Case’, p.1) – to appeal against the controversial decision by the Svay Rieng Provincial Court to drop all charges against Chhouk Bundith, the former Bavet governor, on 18 December 2012. Chhouk Bundith is the chief suspect in the shooting of three unarmed female garment factory workers – left seriously injured – who had been protesting outside a factory owned by Kaoway Sports Limited in Bavet City on 20 February 2012.
Recent acid attack demonstrates lack of progress on the implementation of Acid Law

According to a 24 December 2012 article in the Phnom Penh Post Newspaper (“Acid death may test law”) a woman died after being the victim of a cruel acid attack in Sihanoukville. The victim, Kruy Aing Chheng, was a 20-year-old card dealer in a casino in Sihanoukville.
