2017 Campaign to End Impunity in Cambodia - "Never Forget"

In late 2013, the UN General Assembly proclaimed 2 November as the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, and urged all UN members states to implement specific measures countering the existing culture of impunity. It is regretable that there have been minimal progress in the fight against impunity in Cambodia to date. In fact, impunity has now become even more deeply entrenched in Cambodia’s justice system.

What is Impunity?

Impunity means, "exemption from punishment" or "free of consequence". An example of impunity is the lack of accountability for incidents of violence against activists, journalists, human rights defenders, trade unionists, workers, environmentalists and ordinary people in Cambodia. This promotes fear, self-censorship, denial of the public’s rights to information and redress, and diminishes confidence in the rule of law. When these cases happen, where the main suspects are not properly investigated, where individuals are convicted but immediately released, impunity comes into play. Realization of human rights in Cambodia will not be possible until the perpetrators of serious abuses are brought to justice.

What we do?

CCHR will launch the exhibition with a daily online release of individual profiles starting on 2 November 2017 until 23 November. The exhibition will allow the victims’ family members to call upon the Royal Government of Cambodia (the “RGC”), the public, and the international community not to forget their loved ones, and to seek justice.
